Luca Lampariello – Become a Master Language Learner – Level 2 Overcoming The Intermediate Plateau
BECOME A MASTER LANGUAGE LEARNER: Level 2
OVERCOMING THE INTERMEDIATE PLATEAU
Throw your old textbooks out of the window. It’s time to reach fluency in a new way!
YOU DON’T NEED TO INSTALL A NEW APP… YOU NEED TO SHIFT YOUR MINDSET!
What if you could finally get unstuck with your target language and know for certain that you were going to become fluent?
What if you could practice your language skills through listening to awesome podcasts, and watching fun videos on YouTube?
What if you could become so good at that language that you could even move to a country where it is spoken, fit in well, make friends and build a new life for yourself?
Not bad, right?
it sounds like a DREAM, BUT IT’S ACTUALLY SOMETHING that
YOU CAN TURN INTO REALITY – YOUR REALITY!
The average learner’s life of using textbooks, grammar tables, mobile apps, and flashcards seems like a long way away from the life of fluent, immersed language use that I’ve just described. You may have even dreamed of such a life for yourself, only to find that:
- You feel like you’re making no progress, even after hundreds of hours of learning.
- Popular, beginner-level learning materials leave you bored, frustrated, and disengaged with the learning process.
- Understanding native-level books, movies, and television seems like an impossible task.
- You’re hesitant to speak, and even when you’re brave enough to try, you get tongue-tied.
- Anytime anyone tries to speak with you, your mind goes blank—you have no idea what they just said!
THESE ARE ALL COMMON REALITIES FOR
LANGUAGE LEARNERS AT THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
If you’ve lived through these things, it’s because you’re too skilled for beginner-level content, yet too inexperienced to enjoy content meant for natives. Even if you want to enjoy your target language as you would your native language, you just can’t. You’re not there yet.
For most people, it’s easy to get stuck at this point—this no man’s land between knowing nothing at all about your target language and knowing enough to actually use it productively in your day-to-day life. It’s where the pace of your learning generally slows, and progress becomes harder and harder to see.
In language learning circles, we have a name for this place: the Intermediate Plateau.
When you reach this plateau, you’ve typically lost that initial burst of motivation that comes with starting a new language.
Suddenly, that lost motivation is replaced with a different feeling—first a question, then a doubt, and finally a fear. A fear that maybe this is too hard for you right now. That maybe you’ll never reach fluency. That maybe you’re just not good enough to learn any foreign language, ever.
People who linger on the Intermediate Plateau for too long eventually find these thoughts, these fears to be overwhelming. Feeling stuck, with no clear way forward, they abandon their language learning plans, and move on with their lives.
I’ve seen many stories like this, and they’re all quite tragic. But not because these people aren’t good enough to learn foreign languages, but because I know that they ARE good enough—or would have been, if only they had known how to overcome the intermediate plateau, once and for all.
How do I know all this? Because in my own journey as a language learner, I myself have overcome the intermediate plateau many times—and coached hundreds of other learners to survive it, as well.
HI! MY NAME IS LUCA LAMPARIELLO
When I was a child, I only spoke one language: Italian, which is my native language. Now, as an adult, I speak over ten languages at a fluent level. I’ve used these languages in all aspects of my life: my business, my friendships, my relationships, and my personal development.
In fact, I’ve made it my life’s mission to not only learn as many languages as I possibly can, but to also share the knowledge I’ve gained in order to help people achieve their language learning goals. People like you!
I do this because I know just what it’s like to get stuck at the Intermediate Plateau, feeling hopeless, frustrated, and ready to give up.
In fact, that was my story with English, the language I’m writing in right now. Though I’m quite comfortable with English at this point in my life, that wasn’t always the case. I can still remember when, thirty years ago, I was barely able to string together simple sentences in the language, even though I had been studying it in school for over two years!
Sensing my frustration, my parents decided to hire an American tutor to come to my home and help me work on my English skills 1-on-1. I sensed that this was a good opportunity for me, but I felt even more demoralized when I realized that my pronunciation was so bad that my brand-new tutor couldn’t even understand me when I spoke the little English I did know. Talk about embarrassing!
That was the moment where I could have thrown my hands up in defeat and decided that nope, I was never going to be good enough to speak English fluently. It was the moment when the Intermediate Plateau almost had me beat.
But at that moment, I had something that so few language learners have when faced with giving up at the intermediate level—I had a guide! Even though I didn’t know the way beyond the plateau, my American tutor did, and she enthusiastically took me by the hand and taught me how to get through it, and reach English fluency.
In the time I spent learning English with her, my tutor taught me a number of valuable lessons about what it takes to learn a language successfully.
Specifically, I learned that to learn a foreign language successfully, you must:
- Find or (create) rich, compelling, and comprehensible resources.
- Learn from those resources in a fun and effective way
- Immerse yourself in the language through a wide variety of authentic media
- Design a rock-solid daily learning routine that fuels your motivation
- Maintain that daily learning routine over the long-term, even in the face of significant challenges.
Since my days of learning English with my tutor, I’ve taken those lessons and applied them to each and every language I’ve decided to learn, and they’ve helped me reach results beyond my wildest dreams.
So in the end, it wasn’t talent that led me to language learning success. I’m certainly not a genius, or a savant. What helped me find success was simply learning a series of effective principles, methods, and strategies, and then applying them consistently over a long period of time.
That’s an important point, so I’ll repeat it: I learned principles, strategies, and methods, and then applied them consistently.
It’s not magic. It’s not rocket science. It’s just learning. If I can do it, you can do it, too!
In fact, I can show you how!
DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO START LEARNING
A NEW LANGUAGE FOR THE FIRST TIME?
Back then, I’m sure everything felt fresh and new to you. Because you were learning basic words and phrases, making progress seemed risk-free, and relatively easy.
As time went on, everything that once felt new suddenly felt familiar, and comfortable. You could understand a few things, say a few things—usually just enough to feel competent at the things you wanted to do. And because you felt competent, a certain range of learning activities became your “comfort zone”.
This is probably where you are now.
There’s an expression that goes “what got you here won’t get you there”.
In a language learning context, it means that to move beyond where you are now, you need to completely change how you do things.
And to move beyond the Intermediate Plateau, you specifically need to change how you go about practicing your target language. You need to move beyond what I call “simple practice”, to a more challenging type of practice called “purposeful practice”.
Purposeful practice is a research-backed form of skill development that involves breaking down skills into their essential components, recognizing and addressing your weak points, and then rebuilding that skill anew, stronger than it was before.
At its core, language learning is a set of skills, so if you can learn how to break down and rebuild your skills in this way, you can learn to stretch your capabilities beyond your “comfort zone”, and finally move beyond the intermediate plateau.
Purposeful practice is a real game-changer, especially when it comes to learning languages at the intermediate level. However, it’s still not enough.
In fact, I believe that successful language learning is comprised of three key components: mindset, skill development, and organization. Purposeful practice represents only a small part of skill development. There are many more concepts to be learned, which involve preparing your mind, learning how to learn, and organizing your learning activities.
Fortunately, I’ve spent the last 30 years of my life learning and teaching languages so that I could understand exactly what those concepts are, and how they could best be taught to others.
It’s taken me a long time, but I’ve finally managed to distill everything I learned throughout those decades into a single, comprehensive language learning course for intermediate-level learners.
And you can enroll in that course today—right now, in fact!
BECOME A MASTER LANGUAGE LEARNER – LEVEL 2 –
OVERCOMING THE INTERMEDIATE PLATEAU
Here’s how it works:
The course itself is divided into three parts, each of which is divided into modules. The modules, in turn, each have their own set of videos. In total, the course contains three parts, 15 modules, and over 50 videos!
PART 1 – PREPARING YOUR MIND
In the first part of the course, you’ll learn all about the importance of building a strong language learning mindset. This is a crucial but oft-neglected part of the language learning process—without this kind of mental preparation, even the best methods, resources, and tools will fail you.
Most people who skip this part of the process find that they run out of motivation to learn a language right when they hit the Intermediate Plateau—and that’s when you need motivation the most! This section of the course will teach you to build a strong connection with your target language so that you can generate motivation whenever and wherever you need it!
PART 2 – LEARNING HOW TO LEARN
In part two of the course, titled Learning How to Learn, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the principles, techniques, and strategies that will actually help you absorb your target language, and help you understand it at a deep, deep level.
Once you’ve built this understanding through practicing your listening and reading skills, you’ll then move on to speaking and writing, which are the output skills which will help you use your target language to connect with real-life native speakers.
PART 3 – ORGANIZING YOUR LEARNING ACTIVITIES
In the final part of the course, you will take everything you learned about mindset and skill development and put them together so that you can actually put it to use in your daily life.
Here, I’ll show you how to build a well-organized and multilayered language learning schedule that helps you progressively work towards even your biggest language learning goals. On top of that, you’ll learn strategies for adapting your learning schedule to your own interests and life circumstances, so that you’re never too bored—or too busy—to practice your language skills!
