Evidence-Based Treatment Planning for Disruptive Child and Adolescent Behavior
by Timothy Bruce & Arthur Jongsma, Jr.
Working with troubled children can stir up deep emotions and challenge our ability to stay grounded and empathic. Learn evidence-based planning for Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder in this video, complete with live vignettes and commentary.
Disruptive kids can trigger our reactivity like no other population. Having a solid treatment plan in place can focus your efforts and anchor you when the going gets tough. Drs. Timothy Bruce and Arthur Jongsma discuss evidence-based treatment planning for Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder in this video, complete with live case vignettes and commentary to help you stay present with this notoriously difficult population.
The video is divided into a set of learning modules that provide structure and pacing to the material. Beginning with a detailed review of the features of both Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder as outlined in the DSM, Bruce and Jongsma cover key definitions, symptoms, specifiers, and diagnosis criteria. A brief survey of the movement to identify empirically supported treatments (ESTs) provides historical context. They go on to describe a selection of the latest ESTs for each disorder, including Parent Management Training, Cognitive Problem-Solving Skills Training, and the “Incredible Years” program, and their accessible six-step treatment planning process will help you design plans consistent with ESTs and the often-stringent documentation requirements of the field.
In addition to sample treatment plans, you’ll watch clinical vignettes that illustrate these methods in real time. You’ll see demonstrations of parent training approaches, parent management techniques and adolescent anger control, accompanied by expert commentary from Bruce and Jongsma, who compare and contrast approaches as they evaluate what you’ve just seen. A section on relapse prevention—for either child or parent—rounds out the video, for a tight set of tools for optimizing treatment.
If you’re looking for a comprehensive guide to evidence-based treatment planning or a review of ODD/CD, watch this video now. Bruce and Jongsma have provided us with a strong foundation for building empirically sound treatment plans with confidence.
WHAT THERAPISTS ARE SAYING…
“The program is well produced with a smooth flow between instruction and demonstration….appropriate for viewing by an individual or for use with an entire class. One strength of the program is that the video is presented with a complete script, with the added capability of clicking on a word in the script and starting the video at the correlating spot. This capability allows for easy review and navigation throughout the video.
Overall, I would recommend this video as an introduction for beginning counselors-in-training or for professionals who want to review their understanding in this area. Online education has learned that hour-long videos are not the best for comprehension, yet with the Psychotherapy.net system a person can easily return to view the material in smaller sections. The use of these videos as a learning tool is strongly recommended and technology has now allowed us to access these materials easily and at a time of our choosing.”
— Dr. Michael Mims, NCC, University of Nebraska at Kearney, reviewed in The Professional Counselor
In Depth
Defiance, aggression, bullying, and vandalism are, sadly, just a few of the many distressing behaviors symptomatic of Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder, the topic of this in-depth video from Drs. Timothy Bruce and Arthur Jongsma. Children and adolescents (and their overtaxed guardians) need empathic, knowledgeable support for treatment to be successful—and many clinicians look to evidence-based approaches for this challenging population. Bruce and Jongsma show you how it’s done here, with illustrated lessons, live demonstrations, and expert commentary.
After giving an overview of the DSM criteria for ODD/CD, their clinical features, and a brief history of the empirically supported treatment (EST) movement (including North American and European benchmarks), Bruce and Jongsma outline several ways to fold ESTs into treatment. Their comprehensive list of well-established and probably efficacious treatments includes Parent Management Training (PMT), Parent-Child Interaction Training (PCIT), Group Assertiveness Traning, and Functional Family Therapy, with notes on their target age groups and standout features. You’ll also observe a teenage client receiving instruction in relaxation and cognitive techniques, and you’ll discover ways to incorporate these and other interventions, as well as relapse prevention, into your evidence-based treatment plan.
If you’ve been wondering what, exactly, comprises an effective ODD/CD treatment plan or have been searching for resources on the empirically supported treatments on which these plans are based, this information-rich video is for you.
By watching this video, you will:
- Understand the DSM criteria and specifiers for Oppositional Defiance Disorder and Conduct Disorder.
- Learn about the history of empirically supported treatments (ESTs) and those designated for ODD/CD.
- Know how to create a six-step treatment plan based on well-established evidence-based ESTs.
