Andrew Holecek – The Bardo Teachings: Bringing The Tibetan Book of the Dead to Life – Collection

About

Written in self-secret “twilight language,” The Tibetan Book of the Dead is unfathomable to most people. This course will show you how to penetrate the text, and bring it fully to life – and death. We will focus on the first of the three death bardos, or “transitional processes,” that structure the book: the painful bardo of dying. Why is it painful, and what can we do to remove that pain? We’ll explore the eight stages of death, and how meditation prepares us to die. What are the reverse meditations, and how do they transform pain? What do we do about sudden death? Learn about the five types of phowa, or “ejection of consciousness,” the role of dream yoga as a way to prepare, and how to transcend anxiety and fear. Why is our fear of death a secondary and therefore inauthentic fear? What are we really afraid of? This course will show you how to help others die, and give you the confidence to face your own death with ease. By understanding The Book, we can transform death into a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The bardo teachings proclaim that if we are prepared, there are more opportunities for rapid spiritual evolution in death than there are in life. Upon close reading, The Book is a condensation of the heart-essence of Buddhism, so this course serves as an introduction to the core teachings of this tradition.

Module I: The Importance of Right View
This module presents the Right View of death offered by The Book and contrasts this view with the wrong Western views of death. We learn how death is a journey of the mind, and how meditation prepares us for death. The surprising benefits of studying the bardo literature is offered, along with the practice of contemplation to help us get ready. Shamatha meditation is presented, along with the contemplation of the four reminders.

Module 2: The Tibetan Phenomenology of Death
This module presents the three orienting generalizations that organize the bewildering experience of death, and the doctrinal support of the trikaya and yogachara traditions. The subtle and very subtle body is emphasized, along with the eight consciousnesses that are supported by these inner bodies. We discuss the promise and peril of such articulate maps, guided meditations that give us a tour of these states, and instructions for what to do with sudden death. The practice of tonglen is offered.

Module 3: The Eight Stages of Death
This module articulates the seven aspects of each of the five stages of the outer dissolution, or death of the gross body; followed by a discussion of the three aspects of each of the three stages of the inner dissolution, or death of the subtle body (the cessation of consciousness). The formless meditations that prepare for the final stages of death are presented, along with guidelines for how to help others die.

Module 4: How to Transcend Anxiety and Fear
This module presents an integral approach to anxiety and fear, and shows you how to bring these unwanted experiences onto the path as a way to prepare for death. The five types of phowa, or “ejection of consciousness,” are presented, along with the role of dream yoga as a preparation for death. The reverse meditations are introduced, with a focus on how to transform our relationship to suffering and pain.
